Who might have contact lenses fitted at home?
Home lens fitting suits patients who struggle to reach a high-street practice — whether because of mobility, caring responsibilities, or simply preferring familiar surroundings. It can help existing wearers who need a supervised review, as well as people trying lenses for the first time when a domiciliary optometrist is already visiting for a sight test.
Suitability always comes first. Not every eye or every lifestyle is appropriate for contact lenses. Randy Bains, GOC-registered with 18 years' experience in domiciliary care, will advise honestly if spectacles are the safer or simpler option for your vision and daily routine.
What a first fitting includes
An initial contact lens fitting typically takes a full appointment. We cover eye health checks relevant to lens wear, discuss hygiene and hand care, and teach insertion and removal where you are learning for the first time. We allow time to practise with support so you feel confident before we leave.
Aftercare instructions are written in plain English — how to clean and store lenses, when to remove them, and what symptoms should prompt you to stop wearing them and seek advice. We agree when a follow-up review is needed to check comfort and vision.
Follow-up reviews and sight tests
Follow-up reviews are shorter than the first fitting and can be combined with your routine home eye tests when timing allows. That keeps lens care and general eye health on the same schedule, which is especially helpful for housebound patients who find repeated travel difficult.
If your prescription changes, we explain whether new lenses, adjusted spectacles, or both would serve you best. You are not obliged to order lenses or glasses from us after any appointment.
Supply and delivery
Lens supply is arranged in convenient quantities and delivered alongside any spectacles you order from us. We confirm the cost of lenses before you commit — pricing is separate from the sight test fee or a private home visit charge.
