Private home eye tests
If you are not eligible for an NHS domiciliary sight test but still want the convenience of a home visit, we offer a private option. Randy Bains, our GOC-registered optometrist with 18 years' experience in home eye care, carries out each private appointment personally — the same thorough examination and portable equipment as an NHS visit. Who chooses a private home eye test?
Private home eye tests suit households that are not eligible for NHS domiciliary funding but still want care at home — for example when someone can leave the house only with considerable help, when recovery from surgery makes a practice visit difficult this week, or when a quieter home setting is simply preferable to a busy high-street optician.
You might also book privately if you fail the NHS housebound criteria but value convenience, or if you want an extra sight test between NHS intervals and are happy to self-fund. Anyone can pay for a private domiciliary visit; there is no referral required.
What is included in the fee?
The private home eye test fee is £75 for one visit covering a full clinical examination. You receive the same portable equipment, the same 40 to 60 minutes on site, and the same optometrist care as an NHS-funded appointment. The fee covers travel to your home, vision and prescription testing, eye health checks and a written prescription.

Evening, weekend and Midlands coverage
Private visits are available on weekdays, evenings and weekends at no extra charge — the same as NHS appointments. That helps working relatives sit in after their job or on a Saturday. See weekend and evening home eye tests for how booking works.

How a private visit differs from NHS funding
NHS domiciliary sight tests are free only when the patient is entitled to an NHS sight test and cannot leave home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability. If either part is missing, the NHS will not fund the home visit — but you can still choose a private test at £75.
We can check NHS eligibility for you first on NHS home eye test eligibility. If you qualify, there is no need to pay privately. If you do not, we explain the private option with no obligation to proceed.
After the test: glasses and vouchers
If new spectacles are needed, we bring a frame range suited to older patients and those with grip or handling difficulties. Finished glasses are delivered and fitted at home on a follow-up visit.
