Home Eye Tests – Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really do a full eye test at home?

Yes. A home eye test provides the same clinical assessment as a high-street eye test, using specialist portable equipment. Learn more about the process on What to Expect.

Who is eligible for a home eye test?

Home eye tests are available for patients who are unable to attend a high-street optician due to mobility or health reasons. Eligibility may apply for NHS-funded or private appointments. See Eligibility for full details.

Are home eye tests free on the NHS?

Home eye tests are available for patients who are unable to attend a high-street optician due to mobility or health reasons. Eligibility may apply for NHS-funded or private appointments. See Eligibility for full details.

What happens if I am not eligible for an NHS home eye test?

If you are not eligible for NHS funding, you can still book a private home eye test. Private appointments offer flexibility and convenience. Learn more on Private Home Eye Tests.

Can care home residents have eye tests at the care home?

Yes. We regularly provide eye tests for residents of care and nursing homes. Examinations are organised with care staff to minimise disruption. See Care Home Partnership Services.

Do I need a GP referral for a home eye test?

In most cases, a GP referral is not required. Our team will advise if any additional information is needed.

Will I be able to get glasses after a home eye test?

Yes. If glasses are prescribed, we can arrange supply and home delivery. NHS optical vouchers may be available where eligible. See Glasses Supply & Home Delivery.

How often should I have an eye test?

Most adults are advised to have an eye test every two years, or more frequently if recommended by an optometrist. Our team will advise based on individual needs.

Who can arrange a home eye test?

Home eye tests can be arranged by patients, family members, carers, or care home staff acting on behalf of a resident. Visit Contact to arrange an appointment.
